A way of being in Paro for a while
The Journey · 7 Days · Paro Valley
A slow journey through the upper Paro Valley, walking from one home to the next, sleeping in houses that have stood for centuries. The walking is gentle, the days unhurried - farmhouse hearths, a heritage home where guests sleep inside a five-hundred-year-old museum, candlelit dinner among fortress ruins, a night under canvas in the high valley, and a final descent to a monastery camp above the treeline. Apple orchards, wild peach in season, butter tea churned at a mud stove, archery in a family's own field. This is not a sightseeing trip. It is a way of being in Paro for a while.
Arrive into the Paro Valley and transfer to a farmhouse in the upper valley. Afternoon: a traditional blessing ceremony with juniper smoke and a chang offering to the local deities. Farm-to-table lunch. Walk the fields as the light fades. Evening: churn butter tea at the mud stove before gathering around a bonfire under the stars.
Walk approximately 2.5 to 3 hours through the valley - past a striking dzong viewpoint, through pine forest, and depending on the season, through rhododendron bloom, apple orchards, or wild peach trees. Arrive at a family homestay where the afternoon offers archery and Bhutanese darts in the family's own field, antique household objects accumulated over generations, and unhurried conversation over ara.
Set out on the old village pilgrim route that climbs directly to the Tiger's Nest - not the standard trail, but the path that has carried pilgrims for generations. Light butter lamps inside before descending the far side into a small village above the valley. Tonight: sleep inside a five-hundred-year-old heritage home, washing in its original stone basin and waking within walls that have held a family for half a millennium. Evening: cook ema datshi on the mud stove with the family.
Walk from the heritage home to the ruins of a four-hundred-year-old fortress, passing through three villages with time for tea along the way. Explore the ruins, with the option to meditate within the standing walls. Dinner by candlelight inside the dzong. Evening with a Bhutanese astrologer for a personal chart reading by the fire.
Walk up to a high monastery above the valley - 2 to 3 hours through pine and oak forest, prayer flags marking the higher reaches. Settle into the camp by the monastery. Evening: choice of a sauna at camp or a hot stone bath infused with medicinal herbs.
Walk down from the monastery to a valley hotel. Afternoon at leisure in Paro town - cafes, unhurried strolls, and an evening visit to Bhutan's first independent craft brewery for a guided tour and tasting.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
